The term "Third World" was a way to group nations during the Cold War.

At that time, the world was divided by political ideas. The First World included the United States, Canada, Japan, and many Western European countries. The Second World was made of the Soviet Union, China, and their allies. The Third World was a name for countries that did not join either side. These nations stayed non-aligned, meaning they did not pick a side. This grouping helped people categorize the world based on political ties. It was not originally about how much money a country had.

This idea started with a man named Alfred Sauvy in 1952.

He wrote an article in a French magazine. He compared these countries to the "Third Estate" from old France. In that history, the common people were the Third Estate. They were often ignored or treated unfairly by the leaders. Sauvy used this to show how some nations wanted to be important in global trade. Some people think the idea was already being discussed in 1947. This was during a meeting in New Delhi called the Asian Relations Conference.

Over time, the meaning of the term began to change. It moved from talking about politics to talking about wealth. Many Third World countries were former colonies in Africa, Asia, and Latin America. These nations had to build their own governments for the first time. Because many were economically poor, the term became a stereotype. People began to use it to mean a place was underdeveloped. This was often linked to low life expectancy or high poverty. It was a way to describe nations that lacked many resources.

Different leaders had different ideas about these groups. Mao Zedong created his own "Three Worlds Theory" in the early 1970s.

He did not follow the Western way of grouping nations. In his view, both the United States and the Soviet Union were the First World. He saw them both as huge superpowers. He placed China and India into the Third World instead. He defined the Third World as nations that were being exploited. In 1974, Deng Xiaoping spoke about this theory at the United Nations.

Today, most people think the term "Third World" is outdated. It is often seen as politically incorrect or even disrespectful. Because the world has changed so much, the old labels do not fit well. Many countries have grown very fast and become quite wealthy. Instead of the old name, people use newer terms. They might say "developing countries" or "the Global South." Some also use the term "least developed countries." These new words help describe the modern world more accurately.
