A neutral country is a sovereign state that does not pick a side in a war. This can happen during one specific conflict or stay the same for all future wars. Some countries make this a permanent rule through treaties or their own laws. This choice helps keep the world from splitting into two hostile sides. It creates a space where different groups can exist without constant fighting. Being neutral gives people special protections under the laws of war.

There are specific rules that neutral countries must follow to stay that way. According to the Hague Convention of 1907, fighting nations cannot invade neutral land. They also cannot move troops or weapons across it. However, they are allowed to move wounded people through these areas. Neutral countries must also stop fighting soldiers from staying in their land. They cannot let one side use their territory to help with a war.

Different nations use different methods to stay safe. Some countries use a plan called armed neutrality. This means they have a strong military to stop anyone from attacking them. Switzerland and Sweden are famous examples of this approach. Switzerland has not been in an international war since 1815. Sweden followed this policy until it joined NATO in 2024. Other nations, like Costa Rica, choose to have no military at all.

History shows that neutrality can change over time. In the late 1700s, Catherine the Great of Russia led the First League of Armed Neutrality. This was an alliance of smaller naval powers. They wanted to protect their ships from being inspected during the American Revolutionary War. Later, a Second League formed between 1800 and 1801. It included Denmark-Norway, Prussia, Sweden, and the Russian Empire. This group tried to stop the Royal Navy from checking their ships.

Neutrality does not always mean staying home and doing nothing. Some countries help the world in other ways. Ireland is a neutral country that sends peacekeepers to work with the UN. These soldiers help keep peace in places like the Golan Heights. Other nations, like Austria and Ireland, are part of the European Union. They may also have active roles in global politics. This shows that being neutral can look many different ways.
