The Second World was one of three groups used to describe the world.

This grouping happened during the Cold War era. It described countries that were aligned with the Soviet Union. The Soviet Union was a very large and powerful state. It existed from 1922 until it dissolved in 1991. These nations were often part of the Warsaw Pact or the Eastern Bloc. This group stood in direct opposition to the First World. The First World included countries aligned with the United States and NATO.

Most Second World countries shared similar ways of running their nations. They often used a system called state socialism. In these lands, the government had a lot of control. Many of these places were single-party states. This means only one political party held power. They also used centrally planned economic systems. In this system, the government made the plans for money and goods. These countries usually had medium income levels. They were often more industrial than the Third World but less wealthy than the First World.

Many different places were part of this group at different times. The Soviet Union was the main leader of this group. Other nations like Mongolia and Bulgaria were also part of it. North Korea and Cuba were also aligned with the Soviet Union. Some countries had complicated relationships with the Soviet leader. For example, China was part of the group but later had a split with the USSR. Albania also broke away to align with China in 1961. Yugoslavia was part of the group but left the Cominform in 1948.

History shows how these alignments changed over many years. In 1946, Bulgaria and Albania both established communist governments. Poland and Romania also began their communist rule in 1947. East Germany was established as a Soviet-backed state in 1949. Many of these governments fell during the revolutions of 1989. For instance, the regime in Romania fell during the Romanian Revolution. The government in Czechoslovakia fell during the Velvet Revolution in 1989. The fall of the Berlin Wall also led to German reunification in 1990.

Today, the meaning of the term has changed quite a bit. The old way of grouping countries by politics is mostly obsolete. Now, people often use the term to talk about money. The Second World can now mean middle-income countries. These are also called newly industrialized countries. This new definition includes many different types of nations. It includes places like India, Brazil, and Mexico. It even includes the Russian Federation and South Africa. This shows how the world continues to evolve and change.
