The Non-Aligned Movement is a very large group of nations.

It currently has 121 member countries. This makes it the largest group of states in the world after the United Nations. Many of these members are developing countries. Together, these nations represent about 55% of the entire world population. They work together to protect their own interests and independence.

This group helps smaller nations have a stronger voice in global politics.

This movement began because the world was split into two sides. This period was known as the Cold War. One side was the pro-Soviet socialist bloc, which included the Warsaw Pact. The other side was the pro-American capitalist group, which included NATO. Many countries did not want to join either side. They wanted to avoid being pulled into the orbits of these two major powers. They sought a middle course to keep their own freedom.

Leaders first met to discuss these ideas at the Bandung Conference in 1955.

This meeting in Indonesia was hosted by President Sukarno. It helped create the five principles of peaceful coexistence. These rules include mutual respect and non-aggression between nations. The movement was formally established in 1961 in Belgrade, Yugoslavia.

Important leaders like Josip Broz Tito and Jawaharlal Nehru helped lead this start. Gamal Abdel Nasser from Egypt was also a key founder. Kwame Nkrumah of Ghana and Sukarno of Indonesia were also involved.

Over many years, the movement took on many important jobs.

It helped many lands through the process of decolonization. The group also worked to oppose racism and apartheid in South Africa. In the 1970s, Cuba became a strong leader in the movement. Fidel Castro even chaired a major conference in Havana in 1979.

However, the movement faced hard times when members had conflicts with each other. Some members even disagreed strongly during the Soviet-Afghan War in 1979.

Today, the movement has changed to meet new challenges.

After the Cold War ended in 1991, the group had to redefine its purpose. It now focuses on the needs of the Global South. The members work to fight poverty and social injustice. They also look at the effects of globalization on poor nations. They want to ensure that all countries are treated with equality and respect.
