During the Cold War, the world was split into three groups.

The Second World was one of these groups. These countries were often aligned with the Soviet Union. The Soviet Union was a very large and powerful state. It lasted from 1922 until 1991.

Most Second World countries used a system called state socialism. In this system, the government had a lot of control. Many of these places had only one political party. They also had centrally planned economies. This means the government made the plans for money and goods. These countries often had medium income levels. They were not the richest, but they were not the poorest.

Many different lands belonged to this group. Mongolia and Bulgaria were part of it. North Korea and Cuba also followed the Soviet Union. Some countries, like China, were part of it but later had disagreements with the Soviet Union. By 1991, the Soviet Union dissolved. Many of these governments fell or changed. Today, people sometimes use the term "Second World" to mean middle-income countries. This includes places like Brazil and India.
