The First World included countries like the United States and Japan. The Second World included the Soviet Union and its allies. The Third World was a name for countries that did not join either side.

Many of these nations were in Africa, Asia, and Latin America. Most of them were former colonies. This means they had once been ruled by other nations.

At first, the term was about politics. It meant these countries were neutral. Later, the name began to describe money and wealth. Many people used it to talk about countries that were poor. They thought these places lacked many resources. Because of this, the term became a stereotype. It was often used to mean a place was not developed.

Today, the term is seen as outdated. It can even be seen as disrespectful. Instead, people use new names. They might say "developing countries" or "the Global South."
