Peacekeeping is a way to help create lasting peace in parts of the world.

These missions aim to stop fighting and help people live together again. Research shows that peacekeeping can reduce deaths during battles and on battlefields. It also helps lower the risk that a war will start again. Peacekeepers can be soldiers, police officers, or civilian workers. Many people call them Blue Berets or Blue Helmets because of their light blue headgear.

There are several ways these missions work. Some are called observation missions, which use small groups of people to watch cease-fires. These observers are usually unarmed and only report what they see. Other missions act as a buffer between two fighting sides. These larger groups of troops stand in the middle to keep the sides apart. Some missions are multidimensional, meaning they do many different jobs at once. They might help run elections or help a country's economy grow.

Some missions are more intense and are called peace enforcement. These are often called Chapter VII missions. Unlike other types, they do not always need the permission of the fighting sides to operate. These teams are usually larger and carry more equipment. They may use force to make sure a peace agreement is followed. This is different from Chapter VI missions, which require the consent of all sides. If those sides stop giving consent, Chapter VI peacekeepers must leave.

Peacekeeping has a long history that began with the United Nations. The UN started its first mission in 1948 in the Middle East. This mission was called UNTSO and used unarmed observers to watch an agreement. UNTSO is still working today, many years later. In 1992, a leader named Boutros Boutros-Ghali wrote a report called An Agenda for Peace. He wanted the UN to do even more to help rebuild countries after a war. This helped change how peacekeeping works in the modern world.

Peacekeeping is not only done by the United Nations. Other groups like NATO and the African Union also send people to help. For example, the Multinational Force and Observers works in the Sinai Peninsula.

Peacekeepers also work to protect cultural heritage, which means old buildings and special sites. Protecting these sites helps people keep their identity and stay in their homes. This work connects to making sure a country stays stable for a long time. By helping with social and economic needs, peacekeepers help build a better future.
