French Indochina was a large group of lands in Southeast Asia.

France ruled these territories from 1887 to 1954. This group was officially called the Indochinese Union. It included Cambodia and Laos. It also included parts of Vietnam like Cochinchina, Annam, and Tonkin. A small area called Guangzhouwan was part of it too.

The group changed names over time. By 1941, it was known as the Indochinese Federation. The main cities used for government were Saigon and Hanoi.

France took control of these lands in several steps. First, they colonized Cochinchina in 1862. They then made a protectorate in Cambodia in 1863. A protectorate is a place where another country provides protection. Later, France took control of northern Vietnam after a war with China. By 1887, they joined these parts into one union.

They also added Laos to the union later.

The French leaders held most of the real power. They kept local kings and emperors in place. However, these rulers were mostly figureheads. This means they had no real power to make decisions.

Life changed a lot under French rule. The French used the natural resources from the land. They also brought some new schools and hospitals.

These changes did not help everyone equally. Most improvements only helped the French and a tiny group of local elites. Most of the local people did not see much benefit. This created deep divides between the people living there and the colonists. Because of this, many people started to rebel against French rule. One group was the Cần Vương movement from 1885 to 1889.

World War II brought even more big changes. During the war, the Japanese army took control. They overthrew the French regime on March 9, 1945. The Japanese set up new states like the Empire of Vietnam.

After Japan surrendered, a group called the Viet Minh took action. They were led by a man named Ho Chi Minh. The Viet Minh declared that Vietnam was independent. France then tried to take control of the area again. This led to a long conflict called the First Indochina War.

Eventually, the era of French Indochina came to an end. France fought to keep its control, but they were not successful. They were defeated at the Battle of Điện Biên Phủ.

In 1954, the Geneva Accords were signed. This agreement ended French Indochina for good. In late 1953, Laos and Cambodia gained their independence. Vietnam also gained its independence around this same time.
