This royal family ruled Vietnam for a very long time. Bao Dai was born in 1913 as Nguyen Phuc Vinh Thuy. His name, Bao Dai, means "Keeper of Greatness." He became the 13th emperor of his family in 1926. He was only 12 years old at that time. Because he was so young, a leader called a regent ruled for him.

He was the first Vietnamese monarch to receive a full Western education. He studied at the Lycée Condorcet and later at the Hattemer School. He also studied at Sciences Po in Paris. While living in Europe, he enjoyed a very different lifestyle than his ancestors. He loved playing sports like tennis, golf, and skiing. He was also a very fast and skilled driver of cars.

Returning to Vietnam was not easy for the young emperor.

In 1932, he began a long journey back to his home country. He traveled on a ship named "Président Doumer." There was even a secret plan to hurt him during the trip. Because of this danger, his ship had to travel with warships for protection. When he finally arrived, he traveled by train to the city of Hue. He felt like he was entering a prison after living in freedom.

He wanted to make the imperial court less old-fashioned. He told people they did not have to kneel or bow to him anymore. He also banned the custom of having very long fingernails or long beards. He wanted to move the country toward a new way of governing. However, the French colonial government still held much of the real power. This made it hard for him to change everything he wanted.

His role in history changed many times as the world changed.

In 1945, he proclaimed the Empire of Vietnam. Later, from 1949 to 1955, he served as the chief of state. Some people criticized him for being too close to France. In 1955, he was removed from his position during a vote.

His life shows how much Vietnam changed during the 20th century. He lived until 1997, long after his time as a leader ended.
