The Nguyễn dynasty was the final ruling family of Vietnam. They led the country from 1802 until 1883.

This family belonged to the House of Nguyễn Phúc. They ruled a unified Vietnam as an independent nation for many years. During their time, the empire grew much larger. They expanded their borders into modern-day Southern Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos. This happened through long wars and a movement called Nam tiến.

The story of this family began long before they became emperors. In the 1500s, the Nguyễn clan held much power in Vietnam. One man named Nguyễn Hoàng moved to the far south in 1558.

He became a lord in the Thuận Hóa area. His descendants ruled the southern lands for a long time. They were known as the Nguyễn lords. They built a strong base of power in the south. They even made the city of Phú Xuân their home in 1636.

In 1802, the dynasty officially began with Emperor Gia Long. He took the throne after defeating the Tây Sơn dynasty. This started a new era of imperial rule. Later, Emperor Minh Mạng ruled in the 1830s. Under his rule, the empire had the official name Đại Nam.

Things changed when France arrived in the mid-1800s. The French began a campaign to take control of the land. In 1862, the Treaty of Saigon forced the dynasty to give up parts of Southern Vietnam. This area became a French colony called Cochinchina.

By 1883, the French had even more control. They signed treaties that divided the land into protectorates. These were called Annam in the center and Tonkin in the north.

The Nguyễn emperors only ruled these areas in a small, symbolic way.

The dynasty faced many more changes during World War II. In 1945, the last emperor was named Bảo Đại. With help from Imperial Japan, he ended the French treaty for a short time. He proclaimed the Empire of Vietnam in August 1945.

However, this new empire did not last long. After Japan surrendered, a group called the Việt Minh led a revolution. Bảo Đại gave up his power later that year. This ended 143 years of Nguyễn rule.
