Its official name was the Republic of Vietnam. It was part of a larger struggle during the Cold War. The country was part of the Western Bloc. Many nations, including the United States, recognized it as a real country. However, it could not join the United Nations. This happened because the Soviet Union used a veto in 1957.

The story of South Vietnam began with a split. After World War II, different groups fought for control. The Viet Minh, led by Ho Chi Minh, took power in the North. In 1949, a different group called the State of Vietnam was formed. It was led by a former emperor named Bảo Đại.

Ngô Đình Diệm was a very important leader in the early years. He was an anti-communist leader who became the first president. He took power after a 1955 referendum. This vote changed the government from a monarchy to a republic. Diệm led the country until 1963. After he was killed in a military coup, the government changed many times. General Nguyễn Văn Thiệu later led the country for many years.

By 1965, the United States sent regular troops to help the South. There were many soldiers involved in the fighting. During the Tet Offensive in 1968, over one million South Vietnamese soldiers fought. There were also 500,000 U.S. soldiers and 100,000 soldiers from other nations. The war changed many things for the people living there. In 1973, leaders signed the Paris Peace Accords to try to stop the fighting. However, the war did not end right away. In 1975, a large invasion from the North began. Communist forces took control of the capital city, Saigon, on April 30, 1975.
