It is also known as the Tonkin War. This war happened because France and the Qing dynasty wanted influence in Vietnam. Both nations had different goals for the region. France wanted to find new trade paths through the Red River.

China wanted to keep its traditional influence over Vietnam. Neither side officially declared war at the start.

France began looking at northern Vietnam in the late 1700s.

Later, they took over southern areas to form a colony called Cochinchina. French explorers hoped to use the Red River for trade with China. However, a group called the Black Flag Army stood in their way. This private army was led by a man named Liu Yongfu. They collected taxes from trade along the river. This made it hard for the French to move goods freely.

Things became much more serious in the early 1880s.

A French officer named Henri Rivière took control of Hanoi in 1882. This action worried both Vietnam and China. The Vietnamese government asked China for help to stop the French. China sent regular armies to occupy towns like Lạng Sơn and Sơn Tây.

In 1883, the French suffered a big defeat at the Battle of Paper Bridge. Rivière was killed during this fight against the Black Flag Army.

France sent more troops and leaders to handle the situation.

China faced threats from Russia and Japan at the same time. France also struggled with its own government changes. They signed the Treaty of Tientsin to end the conflict. China agreed to let France have influence over Northern and Central Vietnam. These areas became known as Tonkin and Annam. The war changed how these lands were ruled for many years.
