The Cambodian Civil War was a very difficult conflict in Southeast Asia.

At first, Prince Norodom Sihanouk ruled the nation. He tried to keep a balance between different political ideas. He wanted to stay neutral during the wars in nearby lands. However, his plan became very hard to maintain. In 1965, he stopped taking aid from the United States. Instead, he turned to China and the Soviet Union for help.
Things changed quickly in March 1970.

The war caused huge problems for everyday people.

The fighting lasted for five years. Experts estimate that between 275,000 and 310,000 people died during the war. This included many people killed during U.S. bombing campaigns.

The Cambodian Civil War was a violent conflict in Southeast Asia.

Before the war, Prince Norodom Sihanouk ruled Cambodia. He tried to keep his country neutral. He wanted to avoid the fighting in neighboring Vietnam and Laos. In 1965, Sihanouk stopped accepting aid from the United States. He instead sought economic and military help from China and the Soviet Union.
Internal politics in Cambodia became very unstable during the late 1960s. Sihanouk struggled to balance different political groups. He faced pressure from conservatives and leftist groups. In 1966, the conservative wing won most seats in the National Assembly. This group chose Lon Nol as prime minister. At the same time, social tensions grew in rural areas. In 1967, a rebellion broke out in the Battambang Province. Villagers attacked tax collectors, leading to violent government repression. This unrest helped the Khmer Rouge grow as a guerrilla movement.
The situation changed drastically in March 1970. The Cambodian National Assembly deposed Prince Sihanouk. They replaced him with a pro-American government led by Lon Nol. This new Khmer Republic demanded that North Vietnamese troops leave the country. The PAVN refused to leave. Instead, they invaded parts of Cambodia and helped the Khmer Rouge. They captured much of the northeastern third of the country between March and June 1970. This support helped turn the small Khmer Rouge movement into a much stronger force.
The United States became heavily involved in the conflict. The U.S. wanted to protect South Vietnam and prevent communism from spreading. They provided financial aid and material support to the Khmer Republic. The U.S. also conducted massive aerial bombing campaigns. One secret mission was called Operation Menu. It involved B-52 Stratofortress bombers striking North Vietnamese bases in Cambodia.
The war created a massive humanitarian crisis for Cambodian citizens. Fighting and bombing forced many people to flee their homes. Approximately two million people were displaced from rural areas. This represented more than 25 percent of the total population. Most refugees moved into the cities for safety. The population of the capital, Phnom Penh, grew from 600,000 in 1970 to nearly 2 million by 1975.
Estimates of the human cost of the war are very high. Between 275,000 and 310,000 people were killed during the conflict. This total includes between 30,000 and 150,000 people killed in U.S. bombing campaigns. The war finally ended on April 17, 1975. The Khmer Rouge defeated the Khmer Republic and took control of the country.
