The Greek Civil War was a major conflict that lasted from 1946 to 1949.

It happened right after the end of World War II. The war was a struggle between two very different groups. One side was the established government of the Kingdom of Greece. The other side was a group of rebels led by Communists. These rebels wanted to create a new kind of government called a people's republic.

This fight was very important because it was the first proxy conflict of the Cold War. This means other powerful countries got involved in the fight between the two Greek sides.

To understand the war, we must look at what happened during World War II. From 1941 to 1944, Axis forces occupied Greece.

While this was happening, different groups formed to resist the occupation. The largest group was the National Liberation Front, known as EAM. EAM had a military wing called ELAS, which was led by Aris Velouchiotis.

Other groups like EDES and EKKA also fought the occupiers. These groups had different ideas about how Greece should be ruled after the war ended. This created a power vacuum when the German forces finally left.

The fighting grew much worse after the occupation ended. In 1944, there were big disagreements between the resistance groups and the government.

The rebels formed their own government called the PEEA. This made the British and the United States very worried. By 1946, the disagreements turned into a full civil war. The Communist rebels were supported by Albania and Yugoslavia.

On the other side, the Greek royal government received help from the United Kingdom and the United States. The U.S. provided money through the Truman Doctrine and the Marshall Plan.

The war was very hard for the people living in Greece. Both sides committed many war crimes during the fighting. These included massacres and the abduction of children.

The conflict also had a very high number of casualties. In the final stages of the war, the Greek army took control. This army was led by a commander named Marshal Alexandros Papagos.

The Democratic Army of Greece, or DSE, was eventually defeated by these government forces. This brought the main fighting to an end in 1949.

Even after the war, life in Greece remained very different. Many people who supported the rebels had to flee to other places.

Some people were even sent to prison islands like Makronisos.

Over time, Greece began to change in other ways too. Much of the countryside was ruined by the years of fighting. Because of this, many people moved from farms to live in big cities. This move actually helped the Greek economy grow very quickly later on. Today, historians still study this time to understand how it shaped the country.
