The Greek junta was a period of military rule in Greece. It lasted from 1967 to 1974. This group of leaders was known as the Regime of the Colonels. They were right-wing leaders who took control of the country. This era changed how Greeks lived and how their government worked. It was a time of great change and difficulty for the nation.

The junta took power through a coup d'état. This is when a group uses force to take control of a government. On 21 April 1967, a group of colonels overthrew the caretaker government. They did this just one month before a scheduled election. Many people thought Georgios Papandreou and his Centre Union party would win. The colonels wanted to stop this from happening. They used their control to set many strict rules for the country.

This military rule came from many years of division. For 30 years, people in Greece were split between the left and the right. This tension started during World War II when Greece was occupied. After the war, a Civil War broke out from 1946 to 1949. During this time, the British and the United States helped the Greek government. They wanted to stop the spread of communism in Europe. Many future junta leaders were part of a secret group called IDEA.

Georgios Papadopoulos was the main leader of the junta from 1967 to 1973. Under his rule, the government limited civil liberties. This means people had fewer rights and less freedom. The junta also used imprisonment and exile against people who disagreed with them. In 1973, Papadopoulos tried to make changes through a referendum. However, a hardliner named Dimitrios Ioannidis led another coup to take over. Ioannidis ruled until the military regime finally fell in July 1974.

The end of the junta was caused by a conflict in Cyprus. A Turkish invasion of Cyprus put great pressure on the Greek military leaders. This pressure helped lead to a change in the government. Greece moved away from military rule and back to democracy. This new era is called the Third Hellenic Republic. Later, the leaders of the junta had to face legal trials for their actions.
