The Greek Civil War was a violent internal struggle from 1946 to 1949.

It began shortly after the end of World War II. The conflict pitted the established government of the Kingdom of Greece against a Communist-led uprising. The rebels sought to establish a people's republic called the Provisional Democratic Government of Greece. This new government was led by the Communist Party of Greece (KKE). Its military arm was known as the Democratic Army of Greece (DSE).

This war was significant because it was the first proxy conflict of the Cold War. It showed how foreign powers would involve themselves in the internal affairs of other nations.

The roots of the war lay in the Axis occupation of Greece from 1941 to 1944.

During this time, several resistance movements formed to fight the occupiers. The largest group was the National Liberation Front, or EAM. EAM was controlled by the KKE and had a military wing called ELAS.

Other resistance groups included EDES, led by Napoleon Zervas, and EKKA, led by Dimitrios Psarros. These groups often disagreed on what Greece should look like after the war. This created a power vacuum when the German forces finally withdrew.

As the Axis occupation ended, tensions between these groups escalated. In 1944, the rebels formed the PEEA, a third government to rival the existing ones.

This move angered Great Britain and the United States. In late 1944, the British and Greek troops loyal to the exiled government moved to suppress the PEEA. This led to the disarmament of about 5,000 Greek soldiers and officers. By the time the Germans left in October 1944, ELAS controlled much of the countryside. However, the government in Athens demanded that all resistance forces disarm. This disagreement helped spark the full-scale civil war in 1946.

The war involved complex international support systems. The DSE rebels received support from Albania and Yugoslavia.

However, the rebels were demoralized by a split between leaders. Joseph Stalin of the Soviet Union wanted the war to end. Meanwhile, Josip Broz Tito of Yugoslavia wanted the fighting to continue. On the other side, the Greek royal government was supported by the United Kingdom and the United States. The U.S. provided funding through the Truman Doctrine in 1947 and the Marshall Plan in 1948. This was an early example of the American policy of containment.

The fighting was intense and resulted in a high casualty rate. Both sides committed serious war crimes during the conflict. These included massacres and the abduction of children.

In 1947, the DSE moved from guerrilla tactics to conventional warfare. Despite some military victories, they could not hold their ground. In the final stages, the Hellenic Army took command under Marshal Alexandros Papagos.

The government forces ultimately defeated the DSE in 1949.

The aftermath of the war changed Greek society deeply. Many Communist leaders and DSE fighters fled to the Eastern Bloc.

Others faced persecution, imprisonment, or exile. Some were sent to prison islands like Makronisos.

The KKE remained banned for many years. It was not decriminalized until Greece transitioned to democracy in 1974. The conflict was officially recognized as a "civil war" rather than a "bandit war" in 1989.

Even the landscape of Greece was transformed by the decade of fighting. Much of the mainland was ravaged by the war. This destruction caused a major shift in where people lived. The rural population began to move into urban areas in large numbers. This migration helped lead to the subsequent Greek economic miracle. Today, the war remains a major subject of political and historical debate in Greece.
