The Truman Doctrine was a major plan for how the United States acted in the world.

It began during the Cold War, a time of great tension. The main goal was to stop the growth of the Soviet Union and its allies. President Harry S. Truman wanted to help nations that were being threatened. He believed the United States should support free people who were resisting outside pressure. This plan changed how America worked with other countries for many years.

This plan worked by providing help to countries in need. The United States gave both money and military tools to these nations. This kind of help was meant to keep them stable and strong. Leaders used the idea of containment to explain this goal. Containment meant stopping the spread of communism from one place to another. It was like trying to stop a fire from spreading to new buildings.

President Truman announced this new policy on March 12, 1947. He spoke to a large group of leaders in Congress. Before this, the United States and the Soviet Union had been allies during a war. However, those relations soon changed into a rivalry. A diplomat named George F. Kennan helped shape these ideas. He sent a famous message called the Long Telegram in 1946. He argued that the best way to handle the Soviet Union was through containment.

Two specific countries needed help right away: Greece and Turkey. Greece was fighting a civil war between different groups.

Turkey was facing pressure from the Soviet Union over the Turkish straits. These straits connect the Black Sea to the Mediterranean Sea. To help, the United States sent $100 million in aid to Turkey. In May 1947, Congress approved $400 million in total aid for both nations. This money helped the Greek government win its fight.

The Truman Doctrine had many long-lasting effects on history. It led to the start of NATO in 1949. NATO is a group of nations that work together for safety. The policy also helped lead to the Marshall Plan in Europe. This was a way to fix economies after the war. Many people saw the spread of communism like a disease or a falling row of dominoes. This helped the United States decide how to act in many different parts of the world.
