Lend-Lease was a special way the United States helped other countries during World War II.

This policy allowed the U.S. to send important supplies to nations fighting against the Axis powers. These nations included the United Kingdom, the Soviet Union, France, and the Republic of China. The supplies were things like food, oil, and military tools. The goal was to support the Allies without the U.S. joining the fighting right away. It was a way to help defend nations that the U.S. thought were vital to its own safety.

The way Lend-Lease worked was a bit like a library. Instead of selling goods for cash, the U.S. would lend or lease them. The items were given at no cost to the receiving country. These supplies were meant to be used until they were returned or destroyed. In the middle of a war, most equipment like planes or tools ended up being destroyed. However, some larger things like ships were sometimes sent back after the war ended. This system helped countries that were running out of money to keep fighting.

Before this act, the United States followed a policy called neutrality. In the 1930s, Congress passed the Neutrality Acts to keep the country out of foreign wars. After World War I, many Americans did not want to get involved in more conflicts. By 1939, the U.S. changed this slightly with a "cash and carry" rule. This let nations buy goods if they paid cash and used their own ships. But by 1941, Britain was running out of gold and money. President Roosevelt then proposed the Lend-Lease idea to provide more flexible help.

A total of $50.1 billion in supplies was shipped during the program. This amount was about 17% of all the money the U.S. spent on the war. The United Kingdom received the largest share at $31.4 billion. The Soviet Union received $11.3 billion in aid. France received $3.2 billion, while China received $1.6 billion. Other Allies shared the remaining $2.6 billion in supplies.

Lend-Lease was a major turning point for American foreign policy. It moved the country away from isolationism, which is the choice to stay out of world affairs. By sending these goods, the U.S. became the "Arsenal of Democracy." This meant the country was providing the tools needed to fight for freedom. The program ended on September 20, 1945, after the war was over. Even though the war ended, some debts took a long time to settle. For example, the United Kingdom did not finish repaying some loans until 2006.
