The Blitz was a major bombing campaign during the Second World War.

Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy targeted the United Kingdom with air attacks. The name comes from the word "Blitzkrieg," which means lightning war. This term was used by the press to describe fast German attacks. The goal was to break the will of the British people. It was a very serious time for everyone living in Britain.

How the attacks worked changed over several months. At first, the German air force, the Luftwaffe, attacked during the day. They focused heavily on London to fight the Royal Air Force. After October 1940, the Luftwaffe began attacking mostly at night. This change helped them avoid the planes of the RAF. They used the cover of darkness to reach their targets.

This campaign lasted for eight months in total. It began on September 7, 1940, and ended on May 16, 1941. Adolf Hitler and Hermann Göring ordered the new bombing policy. Göring was the commander-in-chief of the Luftwaffe. London was hit very often during this time. For 56 out of 57 days and nights, the capital was systematically bombed.

Many different cities across the country felt the impact.

Large ports like Liverpool and Hull were hit by raids. Other cities included Bristol, Cardiff, Portsmouth, and Plymouth. Industrial centers like Birmingham, Coventry, and Manchester also faced bombing. More than 40,000 civilians were killed during the war by these raids. In London alone, over one million houses were damaged or destroyed.

Even with the damage, the bombing did not stop British war production. The attacks did not force the country to surrender. Instead, the British had to move some production to different places. Most cities could recover from damage in 10 to 15 days. However, some places like Birmingham took three months to recover. The German air offensive failed to destroy the British war economy.
