The Battle of Britain was a major military campaign during the Second World War.

It was the first big fight in history fought entirely in the sky. Nazi Germany used its air force, called the Luftwaffe, to attack the United Kingdom.

The German leaders wanted to force Britain to agree to a peace treaty. They also wanted to prepare for a sea invasion called Operation Sea Lion.

To do this, they needed to control the air over the English Channel. If the Luftwaffe could win the battle in the sky, Germany could move in by sea.

The fighting followed a specific plan of attack.

In July 1940, the Luftwaffe began by attacking ships and ports like Portsmouth. On August 1, the focus shifted to defeating the British Royal Air Force, or RAF.

The Germans then targeted RAF airfields and important buildings. Later, they began bombing factories that made planes. Eventually, the attacks moved toward cities and people. This period of heavy bombing was known as the Blitz.

It actually got its name from a speech given before the fighting even started. Prime Minister Winston Churchill spoke to the House of Commons on June 18, 1940. He said that the Battle of Britain was about to begin.

Before this, Germany had quickly defeated France and other nearby lands. This left Britain to defend itself against the German air attacks alone.

Many people and tools played a part in the fight.

The British used a new technology called radar to find enemy planes early. This helped Fighter Command, led by Hugh Dowding, stay ready for attacks.

The battle officially lasted from July 10 until October 31, 1940.

This event changed how people thought about air warfare.

In the past, many thought bombers were unstoppable. They believed the only defense was to have even bigger bombers. However, the RAF showed that fighters and radar could work together.

Because the RAF stayed strong, Hitler had to cancel his plan to invade Britain. This was the first major defeat for Germany in the Second World War.
