It was a joint attack on the Republic of Poland. Nazi Germany, the Slovak Republic, and the Soviet Union all took part in the invasion. The main goal of the attackers was to end Poland as an independent country. They wanted to divide the land between themselves. This period of fighting is also called the September Campaign.

Polish forces tried to defend themselves by moving to new lines in the east. They hoped to hold a position called the Romanian Bridgehead. They were waiting for help from France and the United Kingdom. On September 3, the United Kingdom and France declared war on Germany.

Adolf Hitler, the leader of Germany, wanted more land for his country. He wanted to take the Free City of Danzig and the Polish Corridor. These were areas that had been part of Poland since the end of World War I. Germany and the Soviet Union also made a secret deal. This was the Molotov–Ribbentrop Pact signed in August 1939.

On September 17, the Soviet Red Army invaded Eastern Poland. This second attack made it impossible for the Polish plan of defense to work. The Polish government had to order an emergency evacuation to Romania. After the Battle of Kock, the fighting ended on October 6.

The invasion ended the Second Polish Republic. Many Polish people formed underground resistance groups to fight back. Other soldiers escaped to join the Polish Armed Forces in the West. These soldiers remained loyal to the Polish government-in-exile. This shows how people continued to work for their country's independence. The struggle for Poland continued throughout the rest of the war.
