The Dunkirk evacuation was a massive rescue during the Second World War. It is often called Operation Dynamo or the Miracle of Dunkirk.

This event happened because many soldiers were trapped by German forces. British, French, and Belgian troops were surrounded near the coast. They were stuck in a small area in northern France. This situation was very dangerous for the soldiers. They needed to get across the English Channel to safety.

The rescue worked through a huge team effort on the water. Large navy ships like destroyers came to the port.

Some soldiers could use the harbor's protective mole to board ships. Others had to wade through shoulder-deep water on the beach. Many men were picked up by small civilian boats. These were called the Little Ships of Dunkirk. They included fishing boats, yachts, and even lifeboats.

These small vessels ferried people to the larger ships.

This story began in May 1940 during the Battle of France.

German tanks moved through the Ardennes forest to reach the sea. This move cut off the Allied armies from their homes. General Viscount Gort led the British Expeditionary Force. He saw that moving toward the coast was the best plan. A German halt order also gave the Allies more time. This delay helped the soldiers prepare their defenses at the coast. Without this time, the rescue might not have worked.

Many important numbers define this eight-day mission.

The operation lasted from 26 May to 4 June 1940. On the very first day, only 7,669 soldiers were saved. By the end, a fleet of over 800 vessels rescued 338,226 men. The British lost 68,000 soldiers during the earlier fighting in France. They also had to leave almost all their tanks and vehicles behind. This was a huge loss of equipment for the army.

This event changed how people thought about the war. British Prime Minister Winston Churchill spoke to the government about it. He called the rescue a "miracle of deliverance."

However, he was also very honest about the situation. He said it was a "colossal military disaster." He reminded everyone that wars are not won by evacuations. Even though the soldiers were safe, the war was still happening.
