General Gort saw that the men needed to leave. He planned to move them to Dunkirk. This plan was called Operation Dynamo.

Many ships helped the rescue. Large navy ships came to the port.

Small boats also came to help. These were called the Little Ships. They were fishing boats and pleasure boats. Some men had to wade through deep water to reach them.

By the end of the mission, 338,226 soldiers were saved. This was a very big rescue. British leader Winston Churchill called it a miracle. However, he said it was not a victory. The soldiers had to leave their tanks and gear behind. They were safe, but the war continued.
