The Yalta Conference was a very important meeting in early 1945.

It happened while World War II was still going on. The leaders wanted to plan how to reorganize Europe after the fighting ended. They also wanted to create a lasting peace. This meeting was meant to help liberated people choose their own leaders. It was the second of three big meetings between these major powers.

The first was in Tehran in 1943. The third would be in Potsdam in July 1945.

Three main leaders came to the meeting to make big decisions.

Franklin D. Roosevelt was the President of the United States. Winston Churchill was the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. Joseph Stalin was the leader of the Soviet Union. They met near Yalta in the Crimea. They stayed in large buildings called the Livadia, Yusupov, and Vorontsov palaces. Stalin chose this place because he did not want to fly. He also wanted to stay close to his doctors.

Each leader had a different plan for the future. Roosevelt wanted the Soviet Union to help fight Japan in the Pacific. He also wanted them to join the United Nations. Churchill wanted free elections in countries like Poland. Stalin wanted a strong sphere of influence in Eastern Europe. He believed this was necessary for Soviet security. Stalin specifically focused on Poland. He said Poland must be strong and independent. He also wanted to keep some territory that the Soviets had taken in 1939.

Many specific rules were made during these eight days.

The leaders agreed that Germany must surrender without conditions. They decided to split Germany into four occupation zones. The United States, the United Kingdom, the Soviet Union, and France would each run a zone. They also planned to remove Nazi leaders and weapons from Germany. They wanted to make sure Germany could not start another war. The leaders even discussed the future of Korea. They talked about a plan where different countries would manage the land for many years.

The conference changed how the world worked after the war. The leaders signed the Declaration of Liberated Europe. This was a promise that people could choose their own governments. They also agreed that the Soviet Union would join the United Nations. This new group was built to help countries work together. However, the meeting also caused some arguments. Some people felt the decisions made at Yalta led to the Cold War. This was a time when Europe was divided by different political ideas. The meeting helped shape the map of the world we see today.
