A summit is a very important meeting for world leaders. These leaders are called heads of state or heads of government. They meet to talk about big things that affect many people. Most summits have a prearranged agenda, which is a set plan of topics. They also have very tight security to keep everyone safe. Many news cameras watch these meetings closely. These events help leaders build trust with one another. This trust acts like a kind of glue for the whole world.

Summits work by bringing people together to make big decisions. Leaders meet face-to-face to discuss rules for the world. This is often called summit diplomacy. It helps build a sense of trust between different countries. When leaders trust each other, the whole international system works better. This way of working is a common part of global governance today. It helps different nations find ways to live and work together.

History shows us how these meetings have changed over time. During World War II, leaders like Franklin D. Roosevelt, Winston Churchill, and Joseph Stalin held many conferences. They met in places like Moscow, Casablanca, and Tehran to make plans. People did not use the word "summit" very often back then. The term became much more common after the 1955 Geneva Summit. During the Cold War, the media used the word for meetings between the U.S. and the Soviet Union.

Many famous groups hold summits to solve big problems. The G7 is a group that has met many times since 1976. They have met in places like Tokyo, London, and Toronto. The G20 is another large group that started its summits in 2008. They have met in cities like Seoul, Brisbane, and New Delhi. There are also Earth Summits to talk about our planet. These were held in Rio de Janeiro in 1992 and 2012.

Summits can focus on many different things in our world. Some summits help countries talk about peace or war. Others focus on money or how to help people. For example, the Bretton Woods conference in 1944 was about money. There have also been summits about the environment and the Earth. Even the United Nations holds big meetings for the whole world. These meetings help shape how we all live together today.
