The Bretton Woods system was a special set of rules for money.

It helped 44 different countries trade with each other more easily. This system was meant to keep the world's economy stable. It was the first time many independent nations worked together to manage money. Leaders wanted to make sure countries could cooperate instead of fighting over trade. This helped create a sense of order in the global economy.

This system worked by linking different types of money together. Most countries promised to trade their money for U.S. dollars. Then, the United States promised to trade its dollars for gold.

This meant the value of money was tied to something real, like gold bullion. To help manage this, two big groups were created. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) watched exchange rates and lent money to countries in need. The International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD) was also formed to help rebuild.

This plan began during a very difficult time in history. In July 1944, leaders met at the Mount Washington Hotel in New Hampshire.

They were called to the United Nations Monetary and Financial Conference. Even though World War II was still being fought, they looked toward the future. They wanted to avoid the mistakes of the 1930s. During that time, the world suffered through a huge economic depression. The leaders hoped these new rules would prevent such a hard time from happening again.

Many important details shaped how the system worked. The United States held two-thirds of the world's gold at that time. Because of this, the system relied heavily on the U.S. dollar.

Some people, like the Soviet Union, did not agree with the final plan. They felt the new groups were too focused on American banks. Other critics said the system gave the United States too much power. They also felt the rules were hard on smaller, developing countries. These groups had to follow strict conditions to get help.

Eventually, the way the world uses money changed forever. On August 15, 1971, the United States decided to stop trading dollars for gold.

This big change meant the dollar became a fiat currency. A fiat currency is money that is not backed by a physical object like gold. Soon after, other currencies began to float freely as well. The end of the old system was made official in 1976 by the Jamaica Accords. Today, we live in an era where exchange rates move up and down constantly.
