Japanese yen

society Maturity 11-13 Next article →

The yen is the official money used in Japan. It is a very important part of the global economy today. In the foreign exchange market, it is the third most traded currency. It sits right behind the United States dollar and the euro. Many countries also use the yen as a reserve currency. This means they keep it in their banks to help with trade.

Modern money works through a system of value and exchange. The yen uses a decimal system to divide its value. One yen can be split into 100 smaller units called sen. These sen can be split even further into 1,000 rin. In the past, the yen was tied to the value of gold or silver. Today, the yen is a floating currency. This means its value changes based on supply and demand in the market.

Japan's modern money system began during the Meiji era. Before this, the country used many different types of coins and paper money. This caused a lot of confusion and economic trouble. In 1871, the New Currency Act introduced the yen to unify everything. Leaders like Ōkuma Shigenobu helped create this new system. They even decided to make coins into circular discs instead of squares. The Bank of Japan was later founded in 1882 to control the money supply.

History shows that the yen's value has changed many times. After World War II, the yen lost much of its value due to debt and inflation. Under the Bretton Woods system, the yen was pegged to the US dollar. This fixed rate was ¥360 per dollar for many years. In 1971, the US abandoned the gold standard, which changed everything. The Smithsonian Agreement tried to set a new rate of ¥308 per dollar. However, the yen became a floating currency in February 1973.

Understanding the yen helps us see how countries work together. Even though its value moves, the Japanese government sometimes steps in to help. They might buy or sell dollars to slow down big changes. They did this between 1998 and 2003, and again from 2010 to 2011. More recently, they intervened in 2022 and 2024 to stop speculative selling. This shows how much leaders care about keeping their economy steady.
