Long ago, Japan had many different types of coins. This caused many problems for the economy. To fix this, leaders made a new system. In 1871, they introduced the modern yen.

They made coins into round shapes. The yen was divided into smaller parts called sen and rin.

In 1882, the Bank of Japan was started. This bank was given the job of controlling the money. After World War II, the yen lost much of its value. This happened because of debt and rising prices. For a time, the value of the yen was tied to the U.S. dollar.

In 1973, the system changed again. The yen became a floating currency. This means its value can change based on the market. Sometimes, the Japanese government steps in to help. They do this to slow down big changes in the value.
