The Monroe Doctrine is a famous rule for how the United States deals with other countries.

It says that European nations should not interfere in the Americas. The United States wanted to keep the Western Hemisphere separate from Europe. This policy was meant to stop new colonies from forming in the Americas. It also aimed to protect the independence of new nations. This idea became a very important part of American strategy. It shaped how the U.S. acted for many years.

This rule works by setting boundaries between two different worlds. One part of the rule says the Americas are not open to new colonies. The other part says the U.S. will not meddle in European affairs. The U.S. promised to respect existing European colonies in the region. However, it would oppose any new attempts to take over land. This was meant to keep the peace between the two sides. It created a way for the U.S. to state its position clearly. The goal was to keep the New World and Old World apart.

President James Monroe first shared this idea in 1823. He spoke about it during his seventh annual State of the Union Address. A man named John Quincy Adams helped write the main document. At that time, many Spanish colonies were gaining their freedom. The U.S. wanted to make sure these new countries stayed free. Even before 1823, leaders like Alexander Hamilton had similar ideas. They hoped the U.S. would eventually become a strong power in the Americas.

In the beginning, the U.S. was not strong enough to enforce the rule. It did not have a large navy or a big army. Because of this, many countries ignored the doctrine. Great Britain actually helped enforce it using its powerful Royal Navy. Britain wanted to keep trade open with the Americas. In 1862, France invaded Mexico, which was a violation of the rule. The U.S. could not stop them because of its own Civil War. Later, the U.S. grew much stronger and could enforce its own rules.

Many different leaders have used this doctrine over time. Presidents like Theodore Roosevelt and John F. Kennedy have spoken about it. In 1933, Franklin D. Roosevelt helped create the Organization of American States. This group was based on new ways to interpret the doctrine. It focused more on countries working together. Today, people still talk about the Monroe Doctrine in different ways. Some people support it, while others argue against it. It remains a major part of history in the Americas.
