Pax Britannica

history Maturity 11-13 Next article →

The Pax Britannica was a long period of relative peace. It lasted from about 1815 to 1914. This era started after the Napoleonic Wars ended. During this time, Britain became a global leader. People often call this Britain's "imperial century." It was a time when one nation had a huge amount of influence. This influence shaped how different parts of the world worked together.

Britain used its navy to stay in control. The Royal Navy was stronger than any other two navies combined. These ships protected important paths for trade on the ocean. The navy also acted like a "global policeman." They worked to stop pirates from attacking ships. They also worked to block the slave trade. This was done after the Slave Trade Act of 1807 was passed.

This era grew through both land and trade. Britain gained many new lands and 400 million people. They took control of places like Ceylon, which is now Sri Lanka. In the Persian Gulf, Arab rulers signed treaties for British protection. Britain also had an "informal empire." This means they did not rule every land directly. Instead, they used trade to influence places like China and Argentina.

New ideas helped the British economy grow very fast. The Industrial Revolution began in Great Britain in the late 1700s. Many people followed ideas about free markets. One famous thinker was Adam Smith. He wrote a book called "The Wealth of Nations" in 1776. By the 1840s, Britain used free trade as a main rule. This helped British merchants and bankers stay ahead of other nations.

Eventually, the balance of power began to change. Other countries like Germany and the United States grew much stronger. They built many new industries. This made it harder for Britain to stay the top leader. The Pax Britannica finally ended when the First World War started in 1914. Britain remained a large empire for many years after that. It stayed a leading power until the Suez Crisis in 1956.
