The Victorian era was a time of huge changes for the United Kingdom. It is named after Queen Victoria, who ruled for a very long time. Her reign began on 20 June 1837 and lasted until she died on 22 January 1901. This was a period of 63 years and seven months.

During these years, Britain became a very powerful land. The British Empire grew much larger and held a lot of power around the world. While Britain had peaceful relations with most great powers, it did fight some wars. One major conflict was the Crimean War against Russia in the 1850s.

Life for many people changed as the country grew. A new group called the middle class became very important in society. They valued things like good manners, hard work, and strong family life. People began to believe that marriage should be based on romantic love. The home became a private place away from work.

Women often stayed home to care for the family. However, women had few legal rights, which led to a new feminist movement. Even children saw changes, as they gained new legal protections against neglect.

Learning became much more common during this era. For the first time, state-funded schools were built in England and Wales. Education became a requirement for children before they turned twelve. Because of this, almost everyone in Great Britain learned to read by the end of the century.

Science and technology also moved very fast. Britain became a leader in industry and engineering. This meant they were excellent at building machines and new tools. Even though they were good at science, they were seen as less advanced in art.

Not everything was easy or prosperous during these years. In the mid-1840s, a Great Famine happened in Ireland. This caused many deaths and forced many people to move to new lands. In big cities, many people lived in crowded, poor housing called slums. Disease was also a serious problem for those living there.

At the same time, the government passed new laws called Reform Acts. These laws, passed in 1832, 1867, and 1884, helped more people gain the right to vote. These changes helped the country move toward a democracy.

People also found new ways to have fun and relax. Many popular sports like football, rugby, and cycling became common.

Reading became a big hobby with many new books and magazines. Photography also became a popular way to capture everyday life. Even though the era felt steady because of the Queen, it was actually full of shifts in ideas. It was a time when the world was moving toward the modern age we know today.
