arts Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Victorian architecture is a collection of many different building styles. These styles were popular during the mid-to-late 19th century. They are named after Queen Victoria, who ruled from 1837 to 1901. This time is often called the Victorian era.

Architects often looked to the past for inspiration. They used many different historic styles in their new designs. This is sometimes called being eclectic. It means they mixed many ideas together. This helped people preserve and reinvent history through buildings.

Building methods changed a lot during this time. New technology allowed builders to use metal parts. They used frames made of cast iron and wrought iron. Later, they switched to steel because it was stronger.

One very famous architect was Joseph Paxton. He is known for building the Crystal Palace. In Scotland, Alexander Thomson used iron and steel for business buildings. He mixed old ideas with themes from Egypt and the Orient. This made his structures feel very original. Other Scottish architects like Archibald Simpson also worked during this era.

Many different styles appeared during the Victorian period. Some were called Gothic Revival, which looked like medieval buildings. There was also the Renaissance Revival style. Other names included the Second Empire style from France.

Some styles, like the Queen Anne style, lasted a long time. People also used the Arts and Crafts movement style. Many homes combined several styles at once. This made it hard to name just one style for a house. Some people even used nicknames like "gingerbread" for decorated buildings.

These styles traveled far across the world. Many architects moved from England to other places. They went to the United States, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand.

They also went to South Africa and Hong Kong. Because of better travel, architects everywhere read magazines like The Builder. This helped them learn about new fashions. In Australia, a gold rush helped these styles grow. In Ireland, you can see colorful buildings in Cobh. Many Victorian buildings also stand in Sri Lanka.

Today, we can still see these amazing buildings. In San Francisco, famous homes are called the "Painted Ladies."

Canada has many Victorian buildings too. The Parliament Buildings in Canada were finished in 1866. Toronto has a huge collection of industrial buildings in its Distillery District.
