Most stories use settings like old castles or quiet monasteries. You might find characters in dark crypts or lonely forests. Ruined buildings are very important in these books. They show how time passes and how things decay. Some stories even use a "tale within a tale" style. This means one character might tell a story inside the main plot.

Horace Walpole wrote the first Gothic novel in 1764. It was called *The Castle of Otranto*. Before this, writers like William Shakespeare used similar ideas. His plays had ghosts, witchcraft, and many dark secrets. Other writers like John Milton also helped. His work *Paradise Lost* gave us ideas for famous villains. These older works helped make the Gothic style feel serious and real.

Many famous names belong to this history.

Other writers like Oscar Wilde and Robert Louis Stevenson added to the tradition. In the 20th century, authors like Stephen King and Toni Morrison kept the style alive. Even the way people built houses changed. This was called Gothic Revival architecture. People built villas like Strawberry Hill to look old and grand.

Gothic fiction connects to many things we know.

It links to the way we feel about the past. It also connects to the way buildings look. Some stories are called "female Gothic."
