Romanticism was a major movement in art and thought. It began in Europe near the end of the 18th century.

This movement focused on the power of the individual. It celebrated imagination and strong feelings. Romantics wanted to see the world through personal eyes. They believed beauty should cause a deep emotional response. This could include feelings of awe, wonder, or even terror.

They valued the unique spirit of every person.

Artists used several special themes to express their ideas. They had a deep reverence for nature and the supernatural. They also loved the mysterious and the exotic. Many Romantics looked back at the Middle Ages with great respect. They saw that time as a noble era of heroes and chivalry. This was a way to connect with a more organic past. They often used a personal voice in their writing. This helped readers feel a close bond with the creator.

The movement grew as a response to big changes in society. The Age of Enlightenment focused heavily on reason and science. At the same time, the Industrial Revolution was changing the world. Machines and factories were appearing everywhere. Romantics felt that cities and industry were alienating. They thought these changes harmed the environment and the human soul. They preferred the wild beauty of the natural world.

This led them to champion nature conservation.

Romanticism had many roots and a long timeline. Early ideas came from a German movement called Sturm und Drang. This means "Storm and Stress." It suggested that intuition was just as important as logic. In 1774, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe published a book called "The Sorrows of Young Werther." This work helped shape the movement's ideals. The movement reached its peak between 1800 and 1850. Later, some artists followed a "Late Romantic" style.

These artists still valued deep emotion and great skill.

Today, we can still see the influence of Romanticism. It changed how we think about art and music. Many film scores use a lush, orchestral Romantic style. You might hear this in movies from the 21st century. The idea of being truly original also comes from this era. Before Romanticism, many artists focused on following old rules. Romantics believed an artist could create something "from nothing." Their ideas even helped shape modern politics and environmentalism.
