Most stories follow a brave knight on a quest. A quest is a long and difficult journey. This journey serves as the framework for the whole story. The hero often has superhuman abilities. He follows strict codes of honor and good manners. These knights fight monsters like giants or dragons. They do this to win favor with a lady.

These stories work in a specific way. They often use a web of many interwoven stories. This is different from a simple plot about one person. A scholar named Vladimir Propp found a basic form for these tales. The story begins with an initial situation. Then comes a departure and a complication. Next there is a first move and a second move. Finally, the story reaches a resolution.

These romances grew out of older medieval epics. In the past, epics focused mostly on military heroism. The new romances added themes of love and courtly manners. This change happened during the 12th century. Authors also used legends, fairy tales, and history. They changed these old stories to suit their readers. Some stories even had magical or supernatural parts. Knights might meet fairies, wizards, or enchantresses.

Many tales belong to three famous thematic cycles. A poet named Jean Bodel described these in the 12th century. The first is the Matter of Rome. These stories focus on Alexander the Great. The second is the Matter of France. These tales feature Charlemagne and his paladin, Roland. The third is the Matter of Britain. This cycle includes King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table. It also includes the quest for the Holy Grail.

Chivalric romance still influences how we see the past. The word "medieval" often makes people think of these stories. We imagine knights, damsels in distress, and dragons. These are all called romantic tropes. Even famous writers used these ideas. Miguel de Cervantes wrote Don Quixote to mock these stories. Many early romances were written in Old French or Middle English. They helped people dream of a world filled with wonder and ideals.
