The main plot must follow how these characters develop their relationship. They work through challenges to build a deep bond with each other. Most romance books promise an emotionally satisfying or optimistic ending.

This happy ending is a very important rule for many readers. Some people call these stories a way to escape from real life. In these books, the rent is never overdue and the baby never cries. Authors like Nora Roberts say these books celebrate falling in love and commitment.

There are many different kinds of romance stories you can find. These are called subgenres, which are smaller groups within the main type. Some stories are historical romances set in the past. Others are fantasy romance or even science fiction set in space.

You might find stories with special themes called tropes. These include "enemies to lovers" or a "second chance" at love. Some books are very sweet and involve only light kissing. Other books might be more adult or erotic in their descriptions. The genre can cover many different settings and many different types of people.

People have been reading about love for a very long time. Stories like this existed even in ancient Greece. We know of over twenty ancient Greek romance novels from that time.

Five of these stories have survived almost completely to the present day. In China, people during the Ming and Qing dynasties read "caizi jiaren." This term means "scholar and beauty" in English. These books told stories about talented men and beautiful women. This shows that people all over the world have always enjoyed love stories.

Many famous writers helped shape how romance novels look today. Samuel Richardson wrote a popular book called "Pamela" in 1740. Jane Austen also wrote very important books like "Pride and Prejudice."

Later, Georgette Heyer became a famous writer of historical romance. She published her first book, "The Black Moth," in 1921. Heyer was very busy and wrote one or two books every year. She died in 1974 after a long career. Other famous authors like the Brontë sisters also helped the genre grow.

Today, romance is one of the biggest parts of the book market. While many people think only women read these books, that is not true. A 2017 study found that men make up 18% of romance book buyers.

Most romance novels are written from a woman's point of view. However, the stories can be about any kind of couple. Some books focus on same-sex relationships, which are sometimes called F/F or M/M. Whether the story is set in a castle or a galaxy, romance connects readers through the feeling of love.
