Readers enjoy learning about different times through these tales. Many books use a novel format to tell these stories. Some stories feature Viking warriors from the Dark Ages. These men were often tall, blonde, and very handsome. They were adventurers who traveled to many places. Other stories happen in the Middle Ages between 938 and 1485. In these tales, a lady must use her wits. She often seeks a knight who respects her ideas. This kind of story helps readers imagine life long ago.

There are many different kinds of historical settings.

Pirate novels take place on the high seas. These stories often feature characters seeking wealth and freedom. In Western romances, women travel to the American frontier. They must learn to survive in a new world. Native American novels also show different ways of life. These books focus on the heritage and customs of tribes. Some stories are set in England during the Tudor or Victorian eras. Regency romances happen between 1811 and 1820. Each setting offers a unique way to see the world.

Writing these stories has changed quite a bit over time.

In 1921, Georgette Heyer published The Black Moth. This was one of the first popular historical romances. Later, she wrote famous Regency novels inspired by Jane Austen. She used many real details to make her settings feel true. In the United States, a new era began in 1972. Kathleen Woodiwiss published The Flame and the Flower. This book was very successful and sold 2.35 million copies. It was also one of the first to be a paperback original.

The industry grew very fast after that. In 1974, Woodiwiss released The Wolf and the Dove. Another writer, Rosemary Rogers, published Dark Fires. That book sold two million copies in just three months. By 1975, many "Avon originals" had sold 8 million copies total. In 1976, over 150 historical romance novels were published. These books were sometimes called "bodice-rippers" by the media. Many fans loved them, but the name is now seen as offensive. These books often featured intense and dramatic relationships.

Today, the way these books are made is still changing.

Most historical romances are published as mass-market paperbacks. They are rarely published as hardcovers. In 2001, the genre reached a ten-year high. That year, 778 historical romances were published. By 2004, that number fell to 486 books. This means they made up 20 percent of all romance novels. Modern stories often feature very strong and independent women. The heroes in these books are often kind and caring. They learn to truly admire the women they love.
