Kathleen Winsor was a famous American author. She was born on October 13, 1915, in Olivia, Minnesota. Later, she grew up in Berkeley, California. Winsor was a woman with very big goals. At age 18, she made a list of things she wanted to do. One of those goals was to write a best-selling novel.

Winsor worked hard to learn about history. She became interested in the Restoration period through her husband. He was a student writing about King Charles II. While he was away with the Marines in World War II, Winsor studied very hard. She claimed to have read 356 books on the subject. She used all that research to write her first big story.

Her first novel was called Forever Amber. It was published in 1944 and was 972 pages long. The book was a huge success, but it also caused some trouble. Some leaders thought the book was not proper. Because of this, fourteen U.S. states banned the book.

Even with the bans, people loved the story. By 1977, Forever Amber had sold 2,925,268 copies. A movie was even made about the book in 1947. It was directed by Otto Preminger and starred Linda Darnell. Winsor also wrote a book called Star Money in 1950. That book was about her own life as a famous writer.

Winsor lived a very busy and famous life. She married several times during her years as a celebrity. She was married to Artie Shaw, a famous clarinet player. She also married Paul A. Porter, who led the Federal Communications Commission. Winsor wrote five more books before 1986. She died in New York City on May 26, 2003. She was 87 years old.
