They eventually moved to a larger farm called Mbogani near the Ngong Hills. This farm was near Nairobi and had many different types of land. Some parts were for coffee, some were for grazing, and some were wild forest. They hired many local workers, including Kikuyu, Swahili, and Masai people. Karen spent her days managing the farm and learning a new way of life. She even helped take care of local people who were sick with fevers.

Her childhood in Denmark helped shape the writer she became. She was born in 1885 in a place called Rungstedlund.

Her father, Wilhelm Dinesen, was a writer and a politician. He loved the outdoors and hunting, which influenced Karen deeply. Sadly, her father died when she was only nine years old. Because of this, her life changed and she was educated at home. Her aunts and grandmother taught her about women's rights and many new ideas. She even started telling her sister hair-raising stories inspired by old folk tales.

Blixen had a very complex personal life during her years in Kenya. She was married to Bror, but they eventually divorced in 1925.

After her divorce, she became very close to a man named Denys Finch Hatton. He was an English hunter who visited her farmhouse often. Their relationship was very deep, but it was also quite difficult. In 1931, Denys died in a plane crash while flying a biplane. This loss was a very sad moment in her life. She wrote about their time together with great feeling.

Even though her life had many hard parts, her work stayed strong. She wrote many famous collections, such as Seven Gothic Tales.
