He was a key figure who helped move writing from realism toward a style called modernism. His stories often explored the social lives of Americans living in Europe. He focused on how people interact in marriages and different social groups. Some of his most famous books include *The Portrait of a Lady* and *The Ambassadors*.

He also wrote a very famous ghost story called *The Turn of the Screw*. This story is known for being very mysterious and hard to explain.

James had a very unique way of writing about his characters. Instead of just telling what happened, he explored their internal states of mind. He often showed characters with motives that were confusing or even contradictory.

This style made his later books feel like Impressionist paintings. Impressionist paintings focus on light and feelings rather than exact details. By layering different impressions of a person's psyche, he made his stories feel deep. This experimental way of writing made his work stand out from other authors of his time.

Henry was born in New York City on April 15, 1843.

His father, Henry James Sr., was a philosopher and a lecturer. His mother, Mary Walsh, came from a wealthy New York family. Henry grew up in a house filled with many different influences. His father wanted him to learn about science and philosophy. As a young boy, Henry loved to read almost constantly. His father even described him as a "devourer of libraries." This passion for reading helped prepare him for his life as a writer.

His childhood was spent traveling between the United States and Europe.

The family lived in many places like London, Paris, and Geneva. While living in France, Henry became fluent in the French language. He once studied at Harvard Law School, but he did not want to be a lawyer. Instead, he chose to follow his interest in literature. He began publishing his first works in the 1860s. His first novel, *Watch and Ward*, was published in serial form in 1871. He eventually moved to England and became a British citizen in 1915.

James's life shows how much travel and different cultures can shape a person. He spent most of his adult life living abroad in Europe. He met many famous writers, such as Charles Dickens and George Eliot. These connections helped him grow as a thinker and a creator. His work remains important because it looks closely at how humans think and feel. Even famous writers like Jorge Luis Borges found his work to be very unique. Today, we still study his books to understand the complex ways people live and interact.
