He lived mostly in the United Kingdom during the American Gilded Age. Whistler believed in a special idea called "art for art's sake." This meant he made art just for its own beauty. He did not want his paintings to teach lessons or tell moral stories. Instead, he wanted his art to feel like a beautiful song.

He often gave his paintings musical names like "arrangements" or "nocturnes." These names helped people focus on how colors worked together like musical notes.

Whistler used many different ways to make his art. He worked with oil paints and watercolors on paper or canvas.

He was also a master of etching, which is a way to make art on metal plates. To show his personality, he signed his paintings with a unique symbol. His signature was a stylized butterfly with a long stinger for a tail. This symbol represented his two different sides. His art was very delicate and subtle. However, his public personality was often combative and strong.

His journey as an artist began very early in his life. He was born in Lowell, Massachusetts, on July 10, 1834.

His father was a railroad engineer who worked in many places. When his father was hired to build a railway in Russia, the family moved to St. Petersburg. At age eleven, young Whistler enrolled in the Imperial Academy of Arts. He loved talking about art with older students there. He even earned a first-class mark in anatomy, which is the study of the body.

Whistler's path was not always easy or straight. After his father died of cholera, the family moved back to Connecticut. Whistler even attended the military academy at West Point for three years.

He was known as "Curly" because of his long hair. He eventually left West Point and worked as a draftsman mapping the U.S. coast. He even drew sea monsters like mermaids on the edges of his maps! Later, he moved to Paris in 1855 to study art more deeply.

Whistler's work connects to many things we see in museums today. His most famous painting is a portrait of his mother.

It is called "Arrangement in Grey and Black No. 1." Many people today recognize it as "Whistler's Mother." He also created beautiful rooms, such as the famous Peacock Room. His ideas about color and line helped shape the modern art world. Even today, people study his work to see how he used light and harmony.
