Sargent had a very special way of working with paint. He learned a method from his teacher, Carolus-Duran. This way of working used a loaded brush directly on the canvas. Instead of drawing everything first, he focused on the placement of different tones. This allowed him to add bright splashes of color very quickly. His skill was so great that people said he surpassed his teacher. He could draw with a brush with amazing speed and ease.
