John Singer Sargent was a world-renowned American expatriate artist. He is widely considered the leading portrait painter of his generation. His work captured the luxury of the Belle Époque and Edwardian eras.

At the height of his career, he was the most celebrated and expensive portraitist in the world. He produced a massive body of work. This included roughly 900 oil paintings and more than 2,000 watercolors. He also created countless sketches and charcoal drawings. His art serves as a visual record of his global travels.

Sargent developed a highly specialized technical method for applying paint. He studied under the French portraitist Carolus-Duran. This teacher used a progressive approach in his atelier, or art studio. Instead of traditional underpainting, they worked directly on the canvas with a loaded brush. This technique was inspired by the Spanish master Diego Velázquez.

It relied on the precise placement of different paint tones. This allowed for spontaneous flourishes of color without an underdrawing. Sargent's ability to "draw with a brush" became his trademark. Some critics later called this style superficial, but others admired his incredible speed. His skill was so great that some said he surpassed his own teacher.

Sargent's artistic journey involved several distinct stages and styles. Early in his career, he focused on landscapes and impressionistic studies. He produced works like "Fishing for Oysters at Cancale," which showed an interest in light and atmosphere.

He later moved into formal portraiture to build his professional reputation. These commissions often followed the "grand manner," a style of dignified and impressive portraiture. In his later years, he sought more freedom from these formal restrictions. He devoted much of his energy to mural painting on walls. He also practiced en plein air painting, which means painting outdoors in natural light.

His life was shaped by a nomadic upbringing in Europe. He was born in Florence, Italy, in 1856 to American parents. His father, FitzWilliam, was an eye surgeon from Philadelphia. His mother, Mary, was an amateur artist who encouraged his early drawing.

Because his family moved frequently between France, Germany, Italy, and Switzerland, he lacked a formal school education. However, this lifestyle made him a highly cosmopolitan and literate man. He became fluent in four languages: English, French, Italian, and German. He also gained direct experience with great masters by observing their works in museums and churches.

Sargent's career was marked by both rapid success and public controversy. In the 1880s, he submitted his "Portrait of Madame X" to the Paris Salon. This was intended to establish him as a top society painter. Instead, the painting resulted in a major scandal. Following this event, he moved to England to continue his career.

Despite this, his fame grew immensely. He became a sought-after artist for high-society commissions. He was known for his stamina and could paint with workman-like steadiness for decades. He even mentored other artists, such as Emil Fuchs.

His travels deeply influenced the themes and subjects of his art. A trip to Spain allowed him to study the techniques of Velázquez. He became fascinated by Spanish music and dance during this time.

This passion resulted in his masterpiece, "El Jaleo," in 1882. His trips to Italy also provided him with many Venetian street scenes. These studies helped him understand human gestures and postures. These observations were vital for his later success in portraiture. His oeuvre documents locations ranging from the Middle East to Montana and Maine.

Modern historians now view Sargent through a much broader lens. For a long time, art historians largely ignored society painters like him. This changed in the late 20th century. An exhibition in the 1980s of his previously hidden male nudes sparked a new evaluation.

This helped scholars see the psychological complexity in his work. Today, his engagement with race, gender, and emerging globalism is seen as socially progressive. He was also a talented musician and a strong advocate for modern composers like Gabriel Fauré. His life and art remain deeply connected to the changing social structures of his time.
