He was very good at showing how bodies move. He also painted racehorses, jockeys, and portraits of people. His portraits often showed the deep feelings of the person.

Degas worked in a very careful way. He did not like to paint quickly or by chance. He said his art came from study and reflection. He loved to draw fine lines from life and memory.

To get his ideas, he even used photography. He would take photos of his friends and dancers. He often used these photos as a guide for his drawings. He liked to capture a specific moment in time. This helped him show movement very clearly.

His journey as an artist began a long time ago. He was born in Paris in 1834. His father was a banker, and his mother was from New Orleans.

As a young man, he studied very hard at the École des Beaux-Arts. He even traveled to Italy for three years to study art. While in Naples, he made his first studies for a famous painting called The Bellelli Family. He spent much of his youth copying great masters like Raphael and Michelangelo. This helped him learn how to be a great draftsman.

Degas lived through many important times in history. He joined the National Guard during the Franco-Prussian War in 1870. During this time, he found out he had problems with his eyesight.

Later, he stayed in New Orleans to visit his family. He painted a work there called A Cotton Office in New Orleans. This was the only painting of his ever bought by a museum during his life. He also helped start the Impressionist group of artists. However, he did not like the name Impressionist very much.

His life had both bright and difficult parts. He had to sell his house to pay his brother's debts. As he grew older, his eyes became much worse.

He became more alone as time went on. He continued to make art even when it was hard to see. He passed away in Paris in September 1917. Even today, people look at his work to see the beauty of movement. His art connects us to the real life of old Paris.
