He was a very important figure during the 19th century. He helped lead the change from Realism to Impressionism. Realism is a style that shows life as it truly is. Impressionism is a newer style that focuses on light and quick strokes. Manet chose to paint modern life instead of old stories. This made him a pioneer of modern art. His work helped start a whole new way of painting.

Manet had a very specific way of working on his canvases. He used loose brush strokes to build his images. He also simplified many small details in his scenes. Instead of using many smooth colors, he often left out transitional tones. This made his paintings look different from the very neat styles of his time. Some people thought his work looked a bit messy or unfinished. However, this direct style was actually a new and bold choice. He wanted his art to feel fresh and immediate.

Manet was born in Paris on January 23, 1832.

He grew up in a wealthy family with many connections. His father, Auguste Manet, was a French judge. His father wanted him to become a lawyer. He even wanted Édouard to join the Navy. After Manet failed his Navy exams, his father let him study art. He studied under a painter named Thomas Couture from 1850 to 1856. During this time, he also studied the Old Masters at the Louvre.

Many of Manet's most famous paintings caused big arguments in Paris. In 1862, he showed *Music in the Tuileries*.

This work was shown at the Salon des Refusés, which was for rejected art. In 1865, his painting *Olympia* caused a huge scandal at the official Salon.

People were shocked by how bold and modern it looked.

Manet's life was full of connections to other great artists. He was friends with the Impressionists like Claude Monet and Edgar Degas.

He met them through a painter named Berthe Morisot. He also married a piano teacher named Suzanne Leenhoff in 1863. Manet died on April 30, 1883. Even though his work was hard for some to accept, he left a huge mark on history. His simple and direct style influenced many painters who came after him. He showed the world that modern life was a worthy subject for art.
