He helped start new ways of making art. He was a leader in Impressionism and Neo-Impressionism. Many other famous artists looked to him for guidance. One artist, Paul Cézanne, even called him a father figure. Pissarro was known for being a very kind man.

People called him the "dean" of the Impressionist painters. This was because he was wise and very warmhearted. He helped many artists feel like they were not alone. He was a mentor to famous names like Paul Gauguin and Vincent van Gogh.

To make his art, Pissarro often worked outside.

This way of working is called "plein air" painting. He wanted to capture the real world exactly as it looked. He did not want to add fake or grand details. He would paint the sky, the water, and the ground all at once. He believed it was best to paint quickly to catch a first impression. He would work unhesitatingly to keep the scene feeling real. Some people even thought his style was a bit messy. They did not like that he painted things like bushes and mounds of earth.

However, Pissarro felt this was the true way to show nature.

Pissarro was born on July 10, 1830.

He grew up on the island of St. Thomas. His father was a merchant from France. When Pissarro was twelve, he went to boarding school in France. He studied drawing and painting at the Savary Academy. Later, he returned to St. Thomas to work in a business. He still found time to draw during his breaks. At age twenty-one, a Danish artist named Fritz Melbye became his teacher. Pissarro then moved to Venezuela to work as an artist. He filled many sketchbooks with drawings of landscapes and villages.

His life in France was full of many big changes.

He moved to Paris in 1855 when he was twenty-five. He studied under many great masters like Camille Corot. Pissarro was the only artist to show work at all eight Paris Impressionist exhibitions. These shows happened between 1874 and 1886. In 1873, he helped start a group of fifteen artists. He was the person who held the group together. He also loved Japanese prints later in his life. These prints helped him try new ways to set up his paintings. He liked the calm and unity they showed.

Art is often about how we see the world around us.

Pissarro showed us the beauty in everyday life. He painted common people in their natural settings. He focused on the "golden age" of farmers and village life. Pissarro also had a large family of his own. He married Julie Vellay in 1871. They had seven children together. Interestingly, six of those children grew up to be painters too. His work connects the natural world to the lives of real people. He showed that even simple scenes are worth seeing.
