Monet used a special way of working called *en plein air*. This is a French term that means painting outdoors.

Instead of staying in a dark studio, he went into the sunlight. He watched how the sun moved across the land. He often painted the same scene many times. He did this to show how light changes during the day. He also wanted to show the passing of different seasons. This helped him record the true spirit of the French countryside.

Monet's journey as an artist began in France. He was born in Paris on November 14, 1840.

His family later moved to Le Havre in Normandy. His father wanted him to work in a family business. However, his mother supported his dream to be an artist. A painter named Eugène Boudin became a great teacher to him. Boudin showed him how to paint outside in the fresh air. This early training was very important for his future success.

Monet lived a very busy and sometimes difficult life. He spent seven years in the army in Algeria.
