To make his art, Sisley practiced a method called en plein air. This is a French term that means painting outdoors. He did not want to sit in a dark studio all day. He went outside to catch the changing effects of sunlight. This way of working was very new and different at the time. His paintings used bright colors and wide brushstrokes. Because his style was so unusual, many people did not like it at first.

Sisley was born in Paris to British parents. His father worked in the silk business. His mother loved music very much. When he was 18, he moved to London to study business. He did not stay in that job for long. In 1862, he went back to Paris to study art. He studied at the École des Beaux-Arts. There, he met famous artists like Claude Monet and Pierre-Auguste Renoir.

Sisley lived through many different times in his life. In 1870, a war began in France. His father's business failed during this time. Because of this, Sisley had to sell his paintings to buy food. He lived with very little money for most of his life. In 1874, he traveled to England to paint the River Thames. He made nearly twenty paintings of the river near Hampton Court. He also spent time in Wales later in his life.

Today, people can see his beautiful work in many museums. He created about 900 oil paintings and 100 pastels. Some of his most famous paintings are in the Musée d'Orsay in Paris. Other works are in the Art Institute of Chicago. His paintings often use soft colors like pink, purple, and dusty blue.
