He was a member of the Impressionist group of artists. Many Impressionists used soft colors and quick brush strokes. Caillebotte often chose a more realistic style instead. He wanted to paint reality exactly as he saw it. This helped him avoid making art look too much like a stage play. He was also a very important patron for his friends. Because his family was wealthy, he could support other artists. He even helped organize their big art shows.

Caillebotte used many interesting ways to show his art. He often used a high vantage point to look down. This made his paintings feel like they were from a bird's eye view. He also used a technique called cropping. This means he cut off parts of the scene like a camera does. Some people think he learned this from his interest in photography. He also used tilted ground in his paintings. This was likely influenced by Japanese prints. These choices made his work look very modern for his time.

Gustave studied law and became an engineer before he focused on art. He even served in the Franco-Prussian War from 1870 to 1871. After the war, he studied painting with Léon Bonnat. He built his first studio in his parents' home. He inherited a large fortune from his father in 1874. This money allowed him to pursue his many interests.

Caillebotte painted many different types of scenes. He painted his family members, like his brother René.

He also painted quiet moments like people reading or sewing. His country scenes often showed people boating on a stream. One famous painting is called Boating Party from 1877. He also painted busy city streets in Paris. His work Paris Street; Rainy Day is very well known. He even painted still life scenes of food and flowers. He painted meat in butcher shops and colorful roses.

In his later years, Caillebotte moved to a place called Petit-Gennevilliers. He lived there near the banks of the Seine river. He loved the outdoors and spent time gardening. He also built his own yachts at a shipyard. He even won races with his boat named Roastbeef. He spent time with his friend, the painter Auguste Renoir. Caillebotte died in 1894 while working in his garden. He was 45 years old at the time. His art collection later became a huge treasure for France.
