He was a painter, a sculptor, and a print-maker. He was also a famous photographer. Many people call him the most important French photographer of the nineteenth century. He had a very big imagination for making pictures. He also taught many other famous photographers. His work changed how people saw the world through a lens.

Le Gray found clever ways to make better photographs. He worked a lot with paper photography. He improved paper negatives by using wax on them. This made the paper better at showing tiny, fine details. He also used a method called combination printing. This meant he used one negative for the water and a different one for the sky. This helped him make beautiful seascapes, or ocean views.

Le Gray was born on August 30, 1820, in Villiers-le-Bel. His parents wanted him to work as a clerk. However, he wanted to be an artist from a young age. He studied painting under François-Édouard Picot and Paul Delaroche. He even traveled to Italy to study art from 1843 to 1846. He married a woman named Palmira Maddalena Gertrude Leonardi in 1844. They had six children together, but only two lived to be adults.

His career had many big moments and hard times. In 1851, he was one of the first five photographers for the Missions Héliographiques. This job let him document old French buildings.

He also helped start the first photographic organization in the world. He opened a fancy studio in 1855 and took portraits of Napoleon III. But his business had many debts and failed. He had to leave his family and flee the country to escape his creditors. Later, he traveled to places like Syria, Egypt, and Lebanon.

Le Gray spent his final years in Cairo, Egypt. He lived there for about twenty years. He earned a living as a drawing teacher and kept a small photo shop. He died on July 30, 1884, in Cairo. His art is still very famous today. In 1999, some of his photos sold for huge amounts of money at auctions. One photo, "The Great Wave, Sète," sold for over $840,000. This shows how much people still value his amazing skill.
